Moana and Maui will be making a swift return to the silver screen. On Wednesday, Walt Disney Company CEO Bob Iger announced that "Moana 2" will be released in theaters in November.
Adapted from an original television series, Moana answers a prophecy from her ancestors and sets out on a perilous quest across the oceans. A representative from the firm described it as "an adventure unlike anything she's ever faced."
We are thrilled to bring you additional adventures involving Moana and Maui," Iger stated, adding that the series continues to be highly popular. Nov. 27 is the film's theatrical opening.
The musical score of "Moana 2" was composed by Grammy winners Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear, as well as Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa'i. The film was directed by Dave Derrick Jr. The voice performers were not named.
Over one billion hours of the original film have been viewed onDisney+, and it earned over $680 million worldwide. They also have a live-action "Moana" in the works with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.
Film critic Brian Truitt of USA TODAY gushed about the "refreshing" titular heroine Moana and the Lin-Manuel Miranda–co-helmed score of the animated comedy.
"The 'Hamilton' creator and the island personalities of 'Moana' make beautiful music together in this charming seafaring epic," said Truitt. "
"While it wears out its welcome in places, the latest from 'The Little Mermaid' directors Ron Clements and John Musker gets a lot of things right, including a memorable soundtrack, a commitment to Polynesian culture and an MVP voice performance from Dwayne Johnson."
